Playas Del Coco

Playas del Coco lies 35 kilometres (22 miles) west of Liberia, Guanacaste’s main hub. Its close proximity to the Daniel Oduber International Airport in Liberia means you can get off the plane and be sipping a cold one in less than 30 minutes. You can’t beat that for location! The new CIMA Hospital is only 20 minutes away making this a great location for retirees, families with children and those looking for a cosmetic surgery holiday.

This former fishing village is a popular destination for Ticos and international travelers alike. It offers a variety of nightlife and restaurants. Some of the popular restaurants include Papagayo Seafood, Coco Palms, Casa Maria Bonita at Ladera del Mar, Las Olas Seafood, Citron in the Pacifico Retail mall, Jardines Tropicales and Soda Teresita. Most evenings (and well into the night) you can hear plenty of music coming from the open air bars and night clubs in town - from the sounds of Latin America’s top musicians to Rock & Roll. A few of the famous (or should I say infamous) clubs are Zi Lounge, Woodys, Beach Bums, Lizard Lounge and Coconutz Sports Bar. Happy hours range from noon to 7 pm depending on the establishment, so bar hopping is a common past time for all who want to enjoy the laid back atmosphere and energy of a beach town in action. For those looking for a snack on the run, you’ll find a Subway, Texas BBQ Burgers, Asia-Tica Chinese & Thai Cuisine and of course several pizza joints. For those with a sweet tooth, you don’t want to miss out on an ice cream or gelato at the Italian ice cream shop or POPS.

The bank, church, police station and new post office are located along Coco's main boulevard as are well-stocked supermarkets like the Auto-Mercado and Luperon, hardware stores, a variety of pharmacies, taxi services and of course fabulous souvenir shops. There are a number of medical clinics in town offering medical care in Spanish and English with a 24-hour emergency care complete with a new ambulance service.

Sailboats and fishing boats can be seen scattered throughout the bay offering a great opportunity to watch local fisherman at work. Playas del Coco is one of the most popular beaches in the country. It is best known for its sports fishing, surfing, scuba diving and snorkeling. Originally known as the main Costa Rican hub for surfers who want to take in surf spots like Ollie’s Point and Witches Rock, this busy beach has become a prime launch site for many dive shops. Local waters feature rich marine life with huge schools of fish and other marine animals. Many rock formations can be explored with good visibility. Humpback whales, dolphins, Olive Ridley and Leatherback turtles, eagle and manta rays as well as other wildlife can be spotted in the waters around Coco. The pirate ship “The Perla Negra” offers a great event venue where you can “walk the plank” and listen as Captain Richard Hook shoots off the cannon.

The soft volcanic sand of the Playas del Coco beach provides a wonderful place to walk along the shoreline especially when the tide is out. Surrounded by steep hills, this horseshoe shaped bay area is the ideal place to have fun, relax, take in the view or spend the day people watching. By August 2011, the new boardwalk, affectionately called “Amor de Temporada” should be complete. The name comes from a song written by Guanacastecan Héctor Zúñiga Rovira in 1930. It’s a sad love story about an April romance that ends with him riding out of Coco on his horse with only the moon to accompany him and his sweetheart in love with another man.

The weather in Guanacaste is the best in all of Costa Rica. The climate is perhaps Costa Rica's most temperate, averaging 85°F with only 55-65 inches of rainfall annually. Sunshine washes over the region most days even during the rainy season, making outdoor activities from hiking to windsurfing to sport fishing or lazing about on the beach a year-round possibility. The strong Papagayo winds blow in during the dry months to provide a wonderful cooling effect especially while you’re relaxing in the warm sun. With the dry season comes the busy tourist season, but here's a secret not everyone knows about: Guanacaste is a nice place to visit year round. Yes, the dry season is a nice reprieve from the Northern Hemisphere's cold winter, but during the months of May through November the area is thick and green from the almost daily rain showers. Characterized by sweeping savannas and rolling hills that turn dense and green in the rainy season the area around Coco provides an interesting change of scenery as the dry season leaves and the rainy season begins. The spectacular flowering trees herald the change of seasons and one knows that soon everything will be green and lush again.

Panama Beach's smooth, grainy sand is great for laying down to soak up the sun. With its position south of Culebra Bay, Panama's swimming conditions are idyllic. Ocean tides are often low and the break is calm. Additionally, the Papagayo region's abundant good weather makes great conditions for water recreation such as sailing, Scuba Diving, and sport fishing.

Once a remote beach with very little in way of development, Panama Beach has undergone a metamorphous in recent decades as the Papagayo region continues to boom with new developments. The addition of a splendid Four Seasons Hotel is complete with its own first-class golf course, designed by Arnold Palmer. Other luxury resorts extend up and down the coastline, and they are surrounded by large homes and sheik condominiums. Panama's fine-sand beach overlooks the north cusp of Culebra Bay (Bahía Culebra) and its ongoing development. The massive Papagayo Project, with its goal of developing 2,300-acres and $400 million worth of luxurious hotel accommodations, sits in plain view.

As is characteristic of luxury resort towns, services are extensive and often cater to the affluent.
Within close proximity to Playa Panama, Hermosa Beach and Coco Beaches (Playas del Coco) are a mere five-minute drive away on a paved road. There are numerous national parks in the region including the famous Rincon de la Vieja National Park (Parque Nacional Rincon de la Vieja), Palo Verde National Park (Parque Nacional Palo Verde), and Santa Rosa National Park (Parque Nacional Santa Rosa).

Panama Beach's close proximity to Liberia's Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport facilitates access from abroad or elsewhere in Costa Rica. The road from Liberia to Panama is well-paved and allows seamless travel.

Penninsula Papagayo

Penninsula Papagayo

The Gulf of Papagayo is located on the stunningly beautiful Northwest Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. The majority of this area has been designated a National Park known as Santa Rosa. The crown jewel of the area is a gorgeous pristine bay called Bahia Culebra, which is very quickly becoming one of the world’s premier Resort and Second Home destinations. In the 1970’s the Government of Costa Rica designated the Gulf of Papagayo strictly for Resort and Second Home Tourism Development. They picked this area for three main reasons: Weather; The Gold Coast of Guanacaste has more days of sunshine and the least amount of rain than anywhere in the country. Water; This is one of the only areas in the country with tranquil calm bays, perfect for swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, water sports, fishing, boating and marinas as there are no rip tides or dangerous currents like other parts of the coast. For those that love surfing, Witches Rock, one of the top surf destinations in the world, is just a few minutes away. Airport; The Daniel Oduber Airport opened in 2004. It has recently under gone an $18 million expansion making it one of the nicest International Airports in Central America.

A short 20 minute drive to most beaches in the Gulf of Papagayo makes it very convenient after a day of travel. Just a few minutes after you land, you can be enjoying a cocktail on your patio and watching the sunset over the Pacific Ocean. The cornerstone for the future growth of this region is a mega project known as Peninsula Papagayo which encompasses 2,300 acres, 15 miles of coastline and 31 separate beaches. The Anchor tenant is the new Four Seasons Resort and Residences which has become the brand’s Flagship Resort Hotel, and whose shareholders include, Bill Gates and Saudi Princes.

There is also a $25 million Arnold Palmer Signature Golf Course and a new $15 million Marina and a $7 million Beach Club. The long term development plan of Peninsula Papagayo will feature 9 of the top hotels in the world, a 375 slip marina and 3 signature golf courses, with the next course being a Jack Nicklaus signature course. Mountain Country North Western Costa Rica

The Mountains of Northern Costa Rica!

One of the great benefits of living or vacationing in Guanacaste is the close proximity to the Cordillera de Guancaste Mountains and all they have to offer!  Most people when they visit our spectacular beaches do not realize that Rincon de La Vieja National Park is only 1 hour away.

During the dry season the beaches are beautiful and hot with all the great beach activities.  However, the mountains offer a nice change of pace with their cooler temperatures and beautiful year round greenery which includes magnificent rainforest trees and vegetation.  There are countless adventure opportunities for young and old - much different from those offered in and around the beaches.

Treat yourself to a great change of pace and head out to Hacienda Guachipelin for the day and enjoy  everything from zipline canopy tours, horseback riding, river tubing, waterfall climbing, hot spring or hiking.    Go a little further north and visit the beautiful Borinquen Resort or Blue River Resort and treat yourself to a day at their beautiful spas.  For the really adventurous, go to the south end of Rincon Park and explore the wonders of Santa Maria Volcano and Hacienda Santa Maria - the one time hunting lodge of former US President Lyndon Johnson.  You will be amazed at the amount of history and mystery in this area where the beautiful jaguar still wanders these lush hills searching for the elusive tapir.

Howler and white faced monkeys, agoutis, ocelots, white tail deer and many other fabulous birds and beasts abound throughout the National Parks.  The bird life is astounding and the entire area is a birdwatcher’s paradise – toucans, montezuma oropendulas, tanagers, hummingbirds and many other species are plentiful.

Another great area to explore is Tenorio National Park on the way to Upala which is just 1 ½ hours from the beaches.  Close to the town of Bijagua, this area offers beautiful scenery and the wonderful blue waters of the Rio Celeste.

Some say these waters have mysterious medicinal benefits.  Like the other parks in Guanacaste, Tenorio National Park is not over developed and still has that quaint 1950’s feeling.

Or head further south to Costa Rica’s most famous active volcano – Volcan Arenal, which is only 2 ½ hours from the beaches of Playas del Coco, Hermosa, Ocotal and Panama.  It is an interesting drive with lots to see on the way, especially  Lake Arenal – famous for its world class windsurfing and kite surfing, not to mention freshwater fishing for the delicious rainbow bass.

These fresh water fish are exciting to catch and a culinary delight.  Stop for lunch at unique towns like Tilaran, Nuevo Arenal or many other interesting places.

La Fortuna, the closest town to Arenal, offers a tourist bonanza with everything from quad tours, canopy tours, horseback riding, hiking or just watch and listen to the volcano.  Evenings can be spectacular if you are lucky enough to catch an Arenal fireworks display (eruption)!

Guanacaste offers many diversified adventures for everyone.  Be sure to explore and enjoy all the mountains have to offer.  After all, they are only a short drive away from the beach!  You will not be disappointed!  Pura Vida!
