I am a Canadian originally from Ontario, transplanted to Shawnigan Lake, on Vancouver Island, BC. And who has been living here in the Playa Hermosa, Playa Coco area for over 13 years. After 25 years of marketing and sales experience operating my own printing companies I decided to relocate here after my third trip in 1998. Over the years in Costa Rica I have captained my own catamaran "Spanish Dancer" offering sailing charters, I have sold and helped established restaurants for friends and still share a partnership with my wife, Ricardo & Lupita Vargas in Papagayo Vargas Tours, one of the original eco our companies offering small personalized tours in Guanacaste. My wife Josta who is from the Netherlands, speaks six languages and is currently studying for her Costa Rica real estate license. We are both Costa Rica residents and reside in Playa Hermosa.
I wrote my real estate license for Costa Rica 12 years ago and have been involved in the real estate industry since then. I now manage Remax Prestige Ocean Properties office as an associate broker along with managing the Hacienda Del Mar Development Project in Playa Panama, Guanacaste.
This is my home and I take great pride knowing the area inside out and being able to advise new comers on everything they need to know to purchase and settle in here. In 13 years I have established a network of professionals from lawyers, accountants, bankers to builders who can assist in the transition of moving or investing in Costa Rica.
It has been a rollercoaster over the last 5 years but in my opinion there has not been a better time to invest in Costa Rica than now. We have just about bottomed out on pricing and sold off 60% of the fire sale properties.
Real Estate licenses for realtors are still not required in Costa Rica although there is pending legislation that will require anyone selling real estate be a resident, licensed with courses taken and membership in at least one of the two government recognized Real Estate Boards. (I am a member of both)
Until then it is still “Buyer Beware" with unlicensed, no conscience, inexperienced realtors trying to sell you condos and villas that are not clear titled properties with serious problems. I can't stress enough the importance of dealing with a realtor with a track record of honesty and years of experience.
